PRAISE FOR GARDAI AND JUDGE AFTER ‘IDIOT’ BEACH BOYRACER CAUGHT

A TD today praised Gardai for catching an ‘idiot’ boy racer who drove like a nutter on a packed Donegal beach.

Deputy Thomas Pringle said officers who caught Gerard Maguire were ‘superb’ – and he praised a judge who banned Maguire from driving for a year.

The 18-year-old from Roscor, Belleek in Co Fermanagh, was among a number of boy racers who frightened families on Rossnowlagh beach last month, as reported by donegaldaily.com.

Judge Mary Devins described his driving as ‘horrendous’

The Fermanagh man was banned for what Judge Mary Devins called “horrendous driving” and said she had to ban him from driving so that the ‘next idiot’ didn’t also drive like that.

Inspector Sylvie Henry said at Ballyshannon District Court that there was a practice of dangerous driving on the beach which would “have to be stamped out.” Maguire was banned for a year and fined €200.

Today Deputy Pringle had good words for gardai and the judge.

“This has been a major problem and I want to congratulate gardai for bringing this man to justice so quickly.

“I am also delighted that he has been banned. We need to send a message out that our beaches and our roads cannot be used in this way, especially coming up to the summer,” he said.
