The Donegal Chamber Orchestra are staging a new and ambitious event on Saturday 14th May to mark the 150 th anniversary of the birth of the poet Tagore, who is huge in India but less well-known here than he used to be in his lifetime.
The County Donegal VEC string ensemble will be tackling a new hour-long score specially written for them by Letterkenny born composer Derek Ball, but within that musical framework a lot more will be happening.
Against a film backdrop created by visual artist Ian Joyce who is based near Gortahork, two poets Gabriel Rosenstock and Cathal Ó Searcaigh will be delivering short ecstatic bursts of Tagore verse in English and in Gabriel’s new translations into Irish, while some of the verse will be sung by the great Gaoth Dobhair sean-nós singer Dominic Mac Giolla Bhríde.
A rich feast of music, song, poetry and visual art, and what’s more it’s free!
