LETTERKENNY MAN SOLD ME DODGY DVDs – CROOK CLAIMS

May 26, 2011

A 31-year-old Derryman has claimed a Letterkenny crook was the source on his dodgy DVD and CD sales, he claimed in court.

Colin Bernard Hasson, from Ederowen Park in Derry been given a suspended sentence and fined more than £1,200 for selling counterfeit DVDs and CDs at a car boot sale.

He was also sentenced to four months in prison suspended for two years at Limavady Magistrates Court.

District Judge Paul Copeland said that this was a serious offence and often merited a prison sentence.

He added that a lot of people “lose out” in this kind of fraud.

Hasson faced a total of eight charges relating to the sale of the goods on 10 October 2010.

The court heard that police were at the car boot sale in Greysteel to combat the sale of counterfeit goods.

Police took photos of two men selling DVDs and CDs and plain clothes officers bought some from Hasson.

Police then seized 700 films and 55 CDs and a sum of cash.

When interviewed Hasson said he had bought the goods off a man in Letterkenny and he knew they were counterfeit. The street value of the goods was put at around £2000.

A defence solicitor told the court that despite appearances that his client was involved in the making or selling of these, he was really at the bottom of the supply chain.

The solicitor said that when Hasson was asked about burning the films onto discs he said he did not know how to and a search of his home did not uncover any equipment for copying.

He added that his client had been out to make a “fast buck” but was now out of pocket as he had had to borrow the money to buy the initial stock.
