A four-year-old boy has died while playing in a yard beside his home near Donegal Town.

It’s understood that little Daniel Cleary was knocked to the ground when a six foot steel container door fell on him.

Ambulance staff rushed to the scene of the accident at Drumbar near Donegal Town around teatime on Thursday but Daniel was pronounced dead.

Gardaí in the town described the death as a ‘tragic accident’.

A post mortem examination is expected to be carried out at Letterkenny General Hospital later today (Friday).

His parents, Keith and Patricia Cleary, have one other younger son.

Mr Cleary runs a haulage and plant hire business near his home at Drumbar.

It is understood that he is abroad.

His distraught wife Patricia is this morning being comforted by family and friends.
