Portsalon Captains Day

On Saturday last the first major golfing event on the Portsalon callender was staged with the playing of Donal Callaghan’s Captains Prize. The event played in excellent weather conditions attracted one of the largest turnouts ever recorded at Portsalon Golf Club . The large turnout showed the esteem the members hold for their captain Donal Callaghan. The excellent weather coupled with the course condition led to some excellent scoring. The old adage of the early bird catches the worm comes to mind as the winner an early starter Patrick Mc Fadden playing off a 14 handicap recorded a magnificent 42 points to collect the overall prize, runner up was David Mc Laughlin (17) 41 points, Gross Joe Coyle (7) 3rd Teddy Russell (11) 41 points, 4th John Mc Fadden (28) 40 points, Best nines went to Daniel Shields and Martin Mc Cafferty. Country members prize went to B Overend and visitors prize went to Otway Captain Denis Friel. The CSS was 36 points. The Captain organised a special draw on the draw with the funds going to RNLI and the winner was Fergus Friel. The Captain Donal Callaghan thanked everyone who turned o this his special day at Portsalon Golf Club. He thanked the members who bestowed the honour of Captain on him. He thanked John Shields and the greens staff who had the course looking in such magnificent condition. He thanked Sean Mc Gettigan and his staff who looked after all who played. He thanked the frontline staff of Cathal Toland, Grace Shields and Niamh Mc Ginley who put in long hours to ensure the event ran smoothly. Finally he welcomed and thanked his wife Dolores and his sons Donal, Sean and Fergus for all their support during this his year as Captain.

Results

Following the hectic events of the day earlier it was back to basics on Sunday at Portsalon as the members attacked the course again in this members competition. The winner was Eoin Coll with 40 points. The winner of the Sunday 31st July open competition was John Mc Gettigan (15) 41 points 2nd Teddy Russell(11) 39 points, Gross D P Logue (5) 33 points 3rd Bernard Nash (18) 38 points, Visitor J Smith Castleknock. The CSS was 36 points. The results from the open staged on Monday 1st August the winner was Sean Kelly (9) 41 points, 2nd Martin Crowley (11) Strabane points, gross Clive Davidson (15) Letterkenny 25 points, 3rd Dermot Malone Charville (19) 38 points. The CSS was 36 points

Team News

It was exciting week on the team from at Portsalon Golf Club. On Tuesday last club Captain Donal Callaghan led his team into the first leg of the over 50’s semi final against Ballybofey and recorded a three and half match to Ballybofey’s one and half matches win. The return leg will take place shortly and the match hangs in the balance. On Thursday last John Logue led his team to Ballyliffen for the return leg of the Donegal League semi final. Going into the match John’s team led by four and half matches to Ballyliffens half match. The Portsalon team progressed to the final with the opening team of John Shields and Stephen Connolly winning on the 17th hole. The final opposition will be either Rosapenna or Buncrana golf clubs. On Sunday Stephen Connolly led his team in the semi final of the Donegal League senior event. The Portsalon team entertained Ballybofey and with the Portsalon team leading by four matches to three it will leave the return leg difficult for the Kingdom team to progress.

Events

On Saturday 13 th August it’s the Diarmaid Coll sponsored open competition.On Sunday 14th August there is a members competition and on Wednesday 17th August there is a gents 18 hole stableford competition. On Friday 19th it’s a ladies and gents open in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. Saturday 20th its Willie Mc Cleary’s Presidents Day

Match Play

Members are reminded that all match play fixtures must be played by the due date. In the event of matches not being played a draw will take place to determine who proceeds to the next round.

Members and visitors please note that divot bags are now available on entry to the first tee box. Please ensure that you pick up a bag and assist with the course maintenance
