PORTSALON GOLF CLUB NOTES

President’s Day at Portsalon Golf

Following the excitement of open week and the first major at Portsalon Golf Club this week end sees the second golfing major of the year as the players from the Kingdom club will contest for Wm Mc Cleary’s Presidents Prize on Saturday 20th August. Willie who served for many years on the council of Portsalon golf club. Willie was bestowed with the coveted title of club captain in 2002. Through his golfing years Willie has captained and represented Portsalon golf club at all levels. This now is his first of two golfing seasons as President of Portsalon Golf Club. The Captain Donal Callaghan and the members of Portsalon golf club wish club president Willie every success on this his special day at Portslaon golf club.

Captains Outing

One of the onerous tasks bestowed on the vice captain is to organise the captains outing. The vice captain D P Logue has this year arrange a remarkable golfing feast with golf to be played on both the prestigious Portstewart golf links. With hotel accommodation arranged at a very keen price. As places are limited for further details contact the clubhouse on 0749259459. All names must be registered on the notice which is in the club house and booking deposit of €50 must be paid.

Diarmaid Coll Open

There was a large turnout on Saturday last at Portsalon golf club where both members and visitors played in the Diarmaid Coll open 18 hole stableford competition. The scoring was reflected by the blustery weather conditions. The Captain Donal Callaghan would like to express his and the councils thanks to Diarmaid for his generous sponsorship not only the prizes but also for the food supplied on the day.  The result was as follows; winner Eamon Mc Dermott ( ) Letterkenny 37 points,2nd Phillip Durning (7) 37 points,Gross Joe Coyle (5) 32 points, 3rd Paddy Sheridan (9) 37 points, 4th Peter Moldoon  (13) 37 points  Visitor  Dara Mc Menemin (4) 36 points .Best nines went to Gerard Mc Gettigan and Shaun Shields. The CSS was 35 points.

Events

On Saturday 20th it’s Presidents Day Sunday 21st there is a members competition and on Wednesday 24th a gents open stableford competition. A time sheet is in operation for all competitions contact 0749159459 or go online to portsalongolfclub.com.

Portsalon Ladies

The Captain Donal Callaghan and members of Portsalon wish to congratulate the Portsalon Ladies team under the leadership of Mary Barrett  who are through to Ulster ILGU Intermediate Cup Final:  The Portsalon Ladies Intermediate Team travelled to County Armagh Golf Club last week to take on Massereene Golf Club in the Intermediate Cup Semi Final.  A much anticipated competition was held, with both teams eager to prove their might on the tricky parkland course.  As play progressed Portsalon edged out in front and retained their early lead despite some excellent counter-play by Massereene.  A very sporting and challenging match enjoyed by both the participants and the spectators who travelled to Armagh.  Team Captain, Mary Barrett will take her charges Lady Captain Marie Gilligan, Roisin McCormack, Rose Anne Logue, Sarah Nicholl and reserves Deirdre Hensey and Deirdre O’Toole to the Hilton Templepatrick on Sunday 21st where Portsalon will play  Rockmount in their first Intermediate Cup Final.

Results

The winner of the Sunday member’s competition was  Paddy Mc Graorty (19) WITH 40 points, Runner up was John Cullen (18) 38 points. The winner of the Wednesday open played on 10th was Tommy Mc Intyre (27) 41 points, Runner up Joe Coyle (5) 39 points The CSS was 71 reductions only

Match Play

Members  are reminded that the all match play who are due to have their match played  should note that in the event of the matches not being played by the due date a draw will take place to determine who proceeds to the next round.

300 Members Draw

The July draw of the Portsalon Golf Club Members draw was held recently. The winners were €400 Sean Mc Cormack ,€300 Stephen Connolly,€200 Michael Shields (F) and €100 each to Shelia Horkan, Owen O’Malley and Sean Paul Gallagher

Divot Bags

Members and visitors please note that divot bags are now available on entry to the first tee box. Please ensure that you pick up a bag and assist with the course maintenance
