PORTSALON GOLF CLUB NOTES

Team News

Portsalon golf clubs quest for success in this seasons Donegal senior over 50’ s competition came unstock on Saturday last at Ballybofey/Stranorlar golf club. After some confusion regarding the actual date for the return match of this semi final, finnaly tee off. Going into the return leg the Kingdom club lead by three and half matches to one and half matches. To advance to the final it was always going to be a difficult task up against a very strong and fancied side. The match indeed was played in a true sportsman like fashion and with three matches going all the way to the 18th green B/S team eventually emerging winners on the night by four matches to one match. The overall result B/S had five and half matches to Portsalon’s four and half matches. The Captain Donal Callaghan congratulated Ballybofey/Stranlorar on reaching this yeas final and wished them success. He thanked all the players who represented Portsalon in this year’s competition.

Donegal League Final

The final of the 2011 Donegal League will be contested between Portsalon and Rosapenna golf clubs. The first leg will be staged at Rosapenna golf course on Sunday 11th September and the return leg in Portsalon on Sunday 18th September. The Donegal League captain John Logue will putting the final touches to his team and has asked for both support and caddies for his team on this final event.

Past Captains

Calling all past captains of Portsalon golf club, the prestigious J J Wall Past Captain’s cup will be staged on Saturday 10th September and the first tee is reserved for the past captains from 12.20 p.m. A time sheet is in operation for all competitions contact 0749159459 or go online to portsalongolfclub.com

Portsalon Winter Links

The Portsalon winter links details have been announced for the coming season. The event will be staged exclusively at Portsalon Golf Course. The first outing is scheduled to tee off on Saturday 1st October. Membership to the event will be Portsalon members €10 with visitors €15., entry into each days competition thereafter Portsalon members €10, visitors €20.The normal prize format of four nett and four gross prizes will be on offer (depending on the entry). The dates for this years event are as follows; October 1st, 29th, Nov 12th, 26th, Dec 16th, Jan 28th Feb 25th March 10th and Captains day on March 24th If you are interested in joining this winter links competition, contact 07491 59459 to book you place. All should also note that if a member’s misses two consecutive events without notifying the clubhouse, their name will be removed from the time sheet

Captain’s Outing

Due to the popularity of the captain’s week end away, there is now a full complement of 32 Portsalon golfers heading to the seaside course at Portstewart on 24th and 25th September. A further list containing reserves has also been completed and if in the event of a member listed not being able to travel then the place will be offered to one from the reserve list. All travelling members should note that their deposit of €50 must be paid by Sunday 11th September. If deposit is not paid your name will be removed from the list and will be replaced by the name on the reserve list.

Events

On Saturday 10th September there is a gents 18 hole open competition and on Sunday 11TH September there is a members competition. On Wednesday14th September there is a gents open stableford competition. Time sheets are in operation for all competitions contact 0749159459 or go online to portsalongolfclub.com.

Results

Results from last week saw a magnificent 45 points recorded by Fergus Callaghan (22) on Sunday at Portsalon to win the members competition runner up Rory Kenny (11) 40 points, Gross Kevin Mc Gonigle (6) 28 points, 3rd Gerard Mc Cormick (19) 40 points. The CSS was 36 points. On Wednesday 31st August the winner of the open competition was Eamon Mc Conigley (11)40 points, 2nd John Sandilands (20) 39 points, gross Paddy Sheridan (9) 29 pointss, 3rd John Mc Gettigan (14) 37 points The CSS was 37 points.On aturday 3rd the winner of the open stableford was Jay Lucas (Foyle) 38 points, 2nd Sean Gibson 37 points, 3rd John Mc Gettigan (14) 37 points. The CSS was 36 points.

Pierce Purcell

On Sunday last Portsalon competition secretary Joe Hensey facilitated a challenge match request from Letterkenny golf club that are playing in the all Ireland semi final which will be staged in Castlerock golf club next week. The weather left a lot to be desired and testing conditions for the semi finalists, however hopefully it provided good links experience for the Letterkenny team. The captain Donal Callaghan thanked Tony Morrison for organising the Portsalon team and wished Letterkenny golf club ever success in this years finals.

Match Play

Members are reminded that the all match play who are due to have their match played should note that in the event of the matches not being played by the due date a draw will take place to determine who proceeds to the next round.

Membership

All members who are paying their fees by the instalment method should note that their payment is now over due.

Divot Bags

Members and visitors please note that divot bags are now available on entry to the first tee box. Please ensure that you pick up a bag and assist with the course maintenance
