For golfers the winter season began to-day. The finals of the GUI cups and Shields have been held and the Alliance season has begun.
A very wet Barnhill greeted the members of the Alliance this morning after the heavy overnight rain .The continuing benefit of the drainage of the course undertaken some years ago proved its worth once again and play was able to be held without recourse to placing the ball. All agreed the course was in magnificent order.
The scoring proved that despite playing off the back markers and difficult pin placements was very good.
Pride of place goes to Ryan McGowan a 6 Handicapper playing out of Strabane. He not only had the beat Nett score he also holed out in 1 at the 16th .This win means that he also won the St. Patricks Plate .This commerates the former St. Patricks Links in Carrigart. The Silver salver was presented to the Alliance by the famous Jack Nicholas on behalf of the Walsh family .It is always played for at the first competition of the season.
Ryan’s Gross score was only bettered by Enda Kennedy and equalled by no less than professional golfer Michael McGeady.
Ryan’s feat was all the more remarkable as he triple bogied the first bogied the 2nd so after 2 holes he was 4 over. He then proceeded to birdie the 3rd, 7th and 9th to be just 1 over after nine. He dropped a shot at 10 got it back on the 11th dropped 2 more shots at the 13th and 17th but hit the shot all golfers dream of at the par 3 16th when his nine iron put the ball over the flag .It stopped nine feet past and then to his and his playing partners great joy saw it spin back into the hole.
It is his third hole in one the previous two occurring in Strabane Golf Club.
Enda Kennedy was one over after the second got a stroke back on the 7th dropped it again at the ninth to be one over .He then played faultless golf to the 17th which he birdied but gave the stroke back with a bogie at the 18th .He had hit ball right at this hole had to put a second into play and almost eagled it
Michael McGeady ,who holds the professional course record in Letterkenny with 5 under could not find that extra spark to-day .He was 2 over for the first nine and was level par for the back nine without doing anything spectacular.
The runner up in the Nett was local Competitions Secretary Danny McLaughlin, who seems to find his best golf in the more adverse conditions at this time of year.
Next competition at North West Golf Club on 8th October 2011.
