GARDAI HUNT JOYRIDERS BEHIND SPATE OF THEFTS

GARDAI are today hunting a so-called ‘joyriding’ gang behind a spate of car thefts in the Rathmullan area.

Three cars were stolen at the weekend – and two of them were burned out.

Sources say gardai are still searching for a third vehicle. They were all stolen between the Rathmullan and Glenvar areas late on Friday night.

The incident was one of numerous car crime events being investigated over the weekend and comes after Garda Traffic Corps Sergeant Iggy Larkin told RTE at the weekend that officers had seized an incredible 500 cars in the Letterkenny area alone this year.

Many of these had been crushed, said Sgt Larkin.

There were also serious incidents of boy racers joyriding in the town on Friday and Saturday night and residents in Ballyarr reported late night races on the route of the Donegal rally at 3am on Sunday.

One senior Garda source told donegaldaily.com: “It’s no secret we have problems with boy racers but these spate of incidents in and around Rathmullan marks an escalation in the level of crime involved.”

Sgt Larkin is a huge advocate of education in a bid to reduce car crime throughout County Donegal.

He was backed up in that view on the Charlie Bird RTE1 radio programme by rally driver Toni Kelly.
