PRESIDENTIAL candidate Sean Gallagher is in the eye of a political storm today over his ongoing links with Fianna Fail – AFTER he quit the party.
Mr Gallagher, a former member of the party’s National Executive, had claimed to have left the party in 2009.
It has since emerged that he had only left the party in January this year.
But just a few weeks later on February 19th he attended a Fianna Fail rally in Buncrana in support of election candidate Charlie McConalogue as reported by donegaldaily.com at the time (see here: https://www.donegaldaily.com/2011/02/22/lifes-one-big-drag-on-the-election-trail-for-charlie/)
Dr Jim McDaid, a former TD, had posed for pictures afterwards.
According to Gallagher at the meeting just days before the General Election, he said that Mr McConalouge could change politics and the political system for the better.
He made his comments at an election rally where he gave a full endorsement of Charlie McConalogue to a crowd of 300 people.
Returning to the core values of community and going back to our roots of society is what will make this country great again was the key message delivered by Gallagher.
He also pointed out that while our country if facing its most difficult financial crisis in history our international reputation wasn’t built in the last 18 months and nor will it be permanently damaged in such a short space of time.
Today a spokesman for Mr Gallagher insisted that he had attended the election rally “purely in a personal capacity.”
The spokesman said Deputy McConalogue was “a very good personal friend.”
