Thank you for the great response I received from last week’s blog! I was overwhelmed!
I will try and answer a few problems.
One reader asked: my retriever leaks urine whenever he gets excited in the house, any advice?
Well first of all I would recommend you get her checked out with the vet just to make sure that she doesn’t have an infection of any sort. This can be done with a culture check on her urine. If they come back clear and she is all healthy then it sounds like she seems to “leak” when she gets excited. To help avoid this, try not to pet her when you arrive back from somewhere and get visitors to ignore her when they visit until she has calmed down and gone to lie down or is not so hyper. This can be controlled with guidance. If you need further help, feel free to call me directly and I will explain further exercises for your dog as I may need further information if it’s a behavioural problem.
Another one asked: My puppy keeps biting.. how do I stop it?
This is a common problem when getting a pup. Pups don’t have bite inhibition and this has to be taught. If your pup bites your hand, try letting out a high pitched squeal rather than scolding the pup because when the pup was in the litter and maybe was rough, the mother would let out a squeal to let the pup know its hurt her so by replicating the process the natural way you will stop the problem.
On another note, it was brought to my attention that there are photographs circulating around Facebook which depict cubes of cheese with thumb tacks in them. This photograph was originally from an incident in Italy and there was also an incident in South London 18 months ago. Please be informed that nothing like this has been reported here in Donegal. Obviously, be very careful when taking your dogs out in parks and on the beach as people are not all pet friendly and their litter can be dangerous to dogs. Watch out on beaches especially for things like hooks which have floated on shore from fishing boats or bones which can get stuck in their throats.
