A 19-year-old kayaker has been treated for hypothermia after being rescued from the water at Lough Swilly today.

Two lifeboats and the Sligo rescue helicopter were launched after the man got into difficulty while taking part in a kayak race this afternoon.

The man spent two hours in the water before being taken ashore at Rathmullan Pier.

An eye-witness told donegaldaily.com: “The conditions were dreadful all day with high winds and lots of heavy downpours.

“There was a real worry after the teenager got into difficulty. The conditions didn’t help.”

The 19-year-old was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital where he was treated for hypothermia.

He did not suffer any other injuries.

A source said: “Hopefully he will make a full recovery and should be able to go home later or tomorrow.”
