The weather for golf has really moved into winter mode when the Alliance came to play Nairn/Portnoo on Saturday last. The day dawned with slight wind and a gentle drizzle of rain, the wind then increased and came in gusts driving showers of rain ahead of it .There were two very heavy showers one at 9 o’clock and another at 11 and then the clouds parted and the sun came out .The early starters got soaked twice while the later starters got just the one .This was reflected in the scoring with those with the later starting times making the most of the advantage that the weather gave them.
In the previous competitions this year Enda Kennedy has finished each time as the winner of the Gross. On this occasion he had to give best to Sean Qugg by two strokes.
However for a change it was a competitor in the Nett section who had the score of the day .Eamonn McGlinchey a nine Handicapper from Letterkenny set the course alight .After nine he had used up 6 of his shots and had given no indication of what was to come .He pared the par 5 10th birdied the next two dropped a shot at the par 5 13th ,followed this with two pars had a further birdie at 16 dropped a shot at the 17th and birdied the 18th for a 36 ,two under gross and it gave him the best Gross score for the back nine. The main nett prize was his by three strokes.
In the Gross section it was Sean Quigg, as already mentioned who showed a liking for the Links .He was out in 2 under courtesy of birdies at 7 and 8.However this back nine faltered with a double bogey at the par 3 11th .he dropped 2 further strokes but his excellent first nine meant that none of his pursuers could catch him and he finished with two shots to spare..
It is interesting to look at the cards of those behind him. After nine Derek McNeill was in hot pursuit with level par however his chances nosedived when he bogied the 11th and followed this with a triple on the par 4 12th.
Noel Callan and James Kelly had 36 after nine but a triple bogey at 15 put out James. Noel played very steadily but he lost 3 to par on the back. While Connor Mallon who was also 37 for the first nine had a double bogey at 11 to put paid to his chance of glory .Enda Kennedy had a level par back nine but his 4 over on the first nine left him with too much to do.
In the competition for Golfer of the year Odran McGettigan leads the Nett while Enda Kennedy is out in front in the Gross.
Next Competition Saturday 5th November 2011 Ballyliffin G.C.
