Portsalon Golf News

Portsalon Winter Links

The next outing of the Portsalon Winter Links is scheduled for Saturday 29th October.

All members of the Winter Links are reminded that their tee times remain as the previous outing and if you are unable to play please contact the clubhouse. All should also note that if a member misses two consecutive events without notifying the clubhouse, their name will be removed from the time sheet

Gaeltacht League

The scheduled Gaeltacht League match against Cruit Island on 12th November has to be rescheduled as Cruit Island golf club are carrying out repairs to their sixth green. No date has been agreed for the match.

Events

On Saturday 29th it’s the Portsalon Winter Links and Sunday 30th October there will be member’s turkey competitions. On Monday 31st there is a fourball betterball gent’s open competition and on Wednesday 2nd November there is gents open stableford competition. Time sheets are in operation for all competitions contact 0749159459 or go online to portsalongolfclub.com.

Course Improvements

Over the past few weeks despite the poor weather conditions the greens staff have continued with their course development work in conjunction with Paul Mc Ginley. A new bunker has been installed on the 17th and the mound before the 17th green has been removed. Tee improvements are also ongoing at the 18th and 3rd tees which are resulting in golfers playing off temporary tees. As a result of the dropping off on the 2nd 7th and 9th holes the fairways are showing remarkable improvements. The Captain Donal Callaghan and greens staff would like to thank both members and visitors for their co-operation during essential maintenance work.

Results

The winner of the Wednesday open played on 19th October was 14 handicaper Daniel Shilelds with 42 points, runner up Dara Mc Menamin (4) 37 points gross Don Ponsomby (7) 27 points 3rd John Mc Gettigan (14) 37 points. On Saturday the winner of the gents open competition was 12 handicapper Barry Keeney with 36 points, runner up Martin Lynch (11) B/S 33 points, Gross Barry Condon (6) with 26 points 3rd Diarmaid Doherty (23) Letterkenny 33 points was On Sunday the winner of the turkey competition was Peter Doherty with 40 points, runner up Eamon Mc Dermott (4) 39 points Gross Ciaran Burke with 28 points. During the repair work to our fairways all competitions at Portsalon are non qualifying.

Match Play

The final of the doubles match play competition was staged last week end. The Milford pairing of Aodh Mc Cormack and Edward Mc Cleary locked clubs with Ballyare’s Phillip Durning and Chuck Mc Taggart. The Ballyare due of Phillip and Chuck proved to strong and emerged winners of the 2011 club doubles competition.

Ideas for Marketing Improvements

As with any organisation in 2011 we at Portsalon Golf Club have to look at ways of attracting both new members and societies to Portsalon Golf Club. Grace has assumed responsibility to compile a list of ideas for marketing developments and improvements which will be forwarded to the council. If you have any suggestions for either marketing developments or improvements please forward your ideas to Grace in the Clubhouse.

Drop Off

Over the past few weeks members and visitors have been requested to drop off the 2nd, 7th and 9th fairways. As a result the fairways on the selected holes are improving. The fairways will be clearly identified. Please ensure that you drop off on either side of the fairway.

Placing

All members and visitors should note that six inch placing on all fairways only is in operation at Portsalon Golf Club.

Divot Bags

Members and visitors please note that divot bags are now available on entry to the first tee box. Please ensure that you pick up a bag and assist with the course maintenance
