ARRANMORE TRAGEDY: MASS is being celebrated on Arranmore today to mark the 76th anniversary of the boating tragedy which left 19 people – seven from the same family – dead.

Parish Priest Father John Joe Duffy will hold the Mass at 5.30pm, the time the yawl sank on November 9, 1935.

The following people died Edward Gallagher, 61, of Torris, Arranmore; Edward Gallagher, 24, John Gallagher, 22, Michael Gallagher, 29, Patrick Gallagher, 26 (the survivor), and Charles Gallagher, 20, his sons; Madge, 28, and Hannah Gallagher, 16, his daughters; Anthony Gallagher, 17, and Edward Gallagher, 15, Aphort, Arranmore, brothers; Manus Gallagher, 17, Daniel Gallagher, 27, and Hannah Gallagher, 21, Aphort; Patrick O’Donnell, 44, and Kate O’Donnell, 45, Leabgarrow, Arranmore, brother and sister; John Rodgers, 34, of Torris; John O’Donnell, 50, Aphort; Edward Ward, 51, Torris; Peter Leonard, 61, Ballintra; John Gallagher, 20, son of a Michael Gallagher, of Aphort

BALLYSHANNON BOOST: Sinn Fein has welcomed funding of €100,000 towards improvements of roads and footpaths in Ballyshannon.

HSE DISMISS BUNCRANA SCARE-MONGERING: The HSE has hit out at reports that the sale of a medical centre in Buncrana could hit services. Far from hitting services, said the HSE, the new Primary Care Centre in the town will expand them.

TOWN COUNCILS SAFE: The Government has done a U-turn on the scrapping of town councils, meaning Letterkenny, Buncrana, Bundoran and Ballyshannon authorities are safe.

BANK RIP-OFF: The Government has rejected calls from Sinn Fein’s Pearse Doherty for them to force banks to pass on the ECB’s interest rate cut to mortgage holders.

ARTS FUNDING: More than €64,000 has been made available for public art works under the Per Cent Art Scheme, Cllr Dessie Larkin says. More information is at www.donegalpublicart.ie
