The Government has today announced the death of Eithne Kenny, mother of Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Mrs Kenny, 93, died just before 9am this morning in Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar.

Born Eithne McGinley in Glencolmcille in Co Donegal, Mrs Kenny trained as a home economics teacher before marrying fellow teacher and Mayo native Henry Kenny who became a TD in 1954 and continued in the Dail until his death in 1975.

The Taoiseach succeeded him in the seat.

Mrs Kenny is survived by her four sons John, Henry, Enda, and Kieran and daughter Marie Hastings.

Details of the funeral arrangements will be released when finalised.

And according to family friend Senator Paddy Burke at her birthday party in February, she always supported her children

He said: “She always supported her sons, Enda and Henry, during their careers in politics.

“She might not have been that visible on the hustings but she also was always a powerhouse on Enda’s behalf in the background.”
