Looking out the window this morning the weather is enough to make anyone crank up the fire and stay indoors with a large hot mug of tea!
What about our four-legged friends? They love being out in this weather.. love splashing in puddles (the dirtier the better) and smelling the new smells that rain brings to the surface.
There’s nothing more satisfying than to see the dogs racing about in the rain… think about it! We love being in a shower, refreshing ourselves and so do the dogs in the rain. Take them out and watch them enjoy life as dogs should!
At home here we have a “dog towel” pile which we use to dry them off after being out getting wet and dirty! They love being dried too as this gets the blood flowing and warms them up too. Plus they also enjoy the closeness of owner and dog.
Obviously there are products on the market you can use to help prevent a wet dog such as waterproof jackets which do help combat the wet and wet-dog smell syndrome but not all dogs need them. Some dogs such as German Shepherds are double coated and therefore, do not need a coat but if you feel you want to prevent too much wetness, opt for a light waterproof coat and make sure it is fitted well and not too tight to run in.
Little dogs such as Jack Russells and Westies or Miniature Schnauzers would definitely benefit from a coat which is waterproof and warm. All dogs with little body fat such as Greyhounds must always some kind of waterproof fleeced lined coat as they lose heat very quickly. There are also jumpers which can be purchased for these dogs to wear indoors to retain heat in the cold snap of winter.
