West Donegal is mourning the death of one of its great characters following the death of Neily Mulligan of Magherclogher, Derrybeg.
The late Mr Mulligan, 95, was a member of the renowned Aisteoirí Gaoth Dobhair for many decades and was on stages throughout Ireland over the years in both dramas and pantomimes.
A great character, he was widely known and much respected throughout Ireland and his wit and humour remained with him down the years.
Just over three years ago at the age of 91 he was on the stage at Ionad Cois Locha, Dunlewey as part of a tribute night to the late Prionsias Ó Maonaigh and he raised the roof with his wit and humour in a comedy sketch with long time stage companion Francie Diver of Gort a ‘Choirce.
Neily was also a renowned footballer in his day and lined out often for Gaoth Dobhair on many pitches throughout the county.
He was the President of the Bunbeg Fianna Fail branch and earlier this year met former Taoiseach Brian Cowen at Ionad Naomh Padraig in Dore.
He will be laid to rest in Maghergallon Cemetery today following 11am funeral Mass in St Mary’s Church, Derrybeg.
He is survived by his wife Mary, four sons, three daughter and an extended family.
