PORTSALON GOLF CLUB NOTES

Portsalon Winter Links

Due to the adverse weather conditions which prevailed on Friday night and Saturday the turnout for the Portsalon Winter Links competition was well down on previous days. The results were as follows; In the net section the winner Odran Mc Gettigan (24) Strabane 24pts Runner Up: Eugene Mc Keever (19) L/K 32ptsThird: Joe Hensey (14) P/S 32pts

I n the gross section the winner was Tim Browne (4) P/S 31 GrossRunner Up Eamon Mc Dermott (4) P/S 28 Gross Third Seamus Clinton (0) P/S 28 Gross

The next outing of the Portsalon Winter Links will be staged on Saturday 19th December All members are requested to adhere to their tee times and due to the large numbers participating all are asked to avoid slow play.

Christmas Hamper

On Sunday 11th of December Portsalon golf club members will contest for the traditional Christmas hamper. The event will be a shot gun start at 11 a.m. sharp and all participants are asked to record their names (four ball) by 6 pm Saturday to enable a draw to take place for tees and a tee off at 11 a.m.This event will be a qualifying event for the golfer of the year and all fairways will be in play on the day.

Gaeltacht League

Following a short break in activities the Portsalon team under the leadership of club captain Donal Callaghn will travel to play Clougnaneely on Saturday 3rd December and then host Gweedore on Saturday 9th December.

Events

On Saturday 3rd December and Sunday 4th December there will be member’s turkey competitions and on Wednesday 7th December there is gents open stableford competition. Time sheets are in operation for all competitions contact 0749159459 or go online to portsalongolfclub.com. Members should note that the Sunday competition will be staged over 17 holes to facilitate the service for all who lost their lives on the HMS Saldanha

HMS Saldanha

Over the weekend there will a lot of activity around the clubhouse as there will be service for all who lost their lives on the HMS Saldanha which went down in Lough Swilly in December 1811. With the disasters 200 anniversary coming up on 4th December historians will be using x-ray scanners in the area from the 18th tee to the 18th green as many are of the opinion that many of the bodies from the disaster are buried in this location. Details of all the activities in and around Portsalon on Sunday are on the club notice board. All members are welcome to attend the service at 2 p.m

Golfer of the year

The crowning of the prestigious title of golfer of the year is coming up us and the table shows that Patrick Mc Fadden with a three point lead with 21points followed closely by Joe Hensey on 18 points a further four behind is Ciaran Burke on 14 points with Ryan Mc Gettigan and Sam Faulkner on 13 oints and Kevin Mc Gonagle and John Shields 12 points

Results

The winner of the Sunday members competition Eamon Mc Dermott (4) 71 nett, 2nd Cathal Canning (8) 72 3RD Joe Hensey (14) 72.

GUI Fixtures

Barton Shield which is scheduled for Rockmount golf club, Portsalon will play local club Rosapenna in the first round.The Irish Junior Cup will be staged at Portsalon on Sunday 27th May. On Sunday 10th June at Rosapenna will be the Mixed Foursomes .The Irish Junior Cup will be staged at Donegal Golf club on 1st July . The qualifying for the Jimmy Bruen will be at Nairn Portnoo on 6th May. The Portsalon Pierce Purcell team will travel to Greencastle on Sunday 13th May. In the Ulster Cup Portsalon will play Silverwood and in the Ulster Fourball Portsalon will play Royal Belfast. Many of the above details may be viewed on the GUI web site.

Drop Off

Over the past few weeks members and visitors have been requested to drop off the 2nd, 7th and 9th fairways. As a result the fairways on the selected holes are improving. The fairways will be clearly identified. Please ensure that you drop off on either side of the fairway.

Placing

All members and visitors should note that six inch placing on all fairways only is in operation at Portsalon Golf Club.

Divot Bags

Members and visitors please note that divot bags are now available on entry to the first tee box. Please ensure that you pick up a bag and assist with the course maintenance
