ANOTHER BBC investigation into clerical sex abuse in Raphoe and Derry will “expose more cases” donegaldaily.com has learned.
The programme’s investigative team is being led by Darragh McIntyre, the BBC journalist whose investigations into the Father Eugene Greene case rocked the Catholic Church.
Mr McIntyre was in Letterkenny yesterday for a press conference on the Raphoe Audit. It’s understood that up to six other BBC journalists are also working on the investigation which will be broadcast in the New Year.
“They have already gathered a great deal of new information,” said one source.
“You can have no doubts whatsoever that the investigation will be thorough.”
It’s thought more than €1M in compensation has been paid out to victims of abuse in Raphoe over the past 20 years.
Victims are now waiting to see if the Government gives the go-ahead for a state inquiry into Raphoe, with RTE’s religious affairs correspondent Joe Little saying it may be hit by a lack of finances.
Children’s Minister Frances Fitzgerald however has not ruled out a further investigation at this stage, with Bishop of Raphoe Philip Boyce saying he would welcome whatever was agreed – and would cooperate fully with it.
