THE crisis over the euro has pushed it down against sterling – giving a jobs boost to Donegal.
It will make shopping north of the Border, where prices are steadily rising, less attractive for consumers.
And it will bring more northern shoppers back across the Border – especially to Letterkenny.
It will also help hotels sell beds to northerners who are getting closer to €1.20 for the £1.
Sterling rose to a one-month high against the euro yesterday and could to rise to its strongest in nine months as investors sold the single currency, annoyed at the growing debt crisis.
The euro fell as low as 84.96 pence yesterday. Further falls today would take it below 84.86, its March weakest.
Already northern shoppers are returning, particularly at weekends.
Mark McCloskey of Evolve Menswear in Letterkenny said sterling takings are way up on previous years as weekend shoppers from Belfast, Derry and even Newry come to Donegal to shop.
Chamber of Commerce boss Toni Forrester revealed that sales of Shop LK vouchers are up 20% on last year.
