A photograph by a local amateur photographer has beat off thousands of others worldwide to make the ‘editors’ favorites’ in this year’s prestigious National Geographic Photo Contest.

The picture by Cronan Scanlon captures John Daniel McGinley with his dog ‘Madge’ in his home in An Coimín in the Glenfin Gaeltacht.

Cronan is a journalist with the Donegal News in Letterkenny and is a member of the local photographic club, LF Foto.

Almost 21,000 photos were entered into this year’s competition.

Each week, the National Geographic photo editors pick a selection of their favourite images in each of the three categories: People, Places and Nature.

Cronan’s picture made the cut in week ten in the ‘People’ category.

Judged on creativity and photographic quality, one first place winner will be selected in each category by a panel of experts. From the three category winners, the grand prize winner will be selected.

The Grand Prize Winner will receive $10,000 and a trip to National Geographic headquarters in Washington, D.C., to participate in the annual National Geographic Photography Seminar in January 2012.

This year’s winners will be announced on Thursday, December 15.
