UDPATED: Further storm-force gales across Co Donegal this morning are causing major problems on the roads with Gardai warning motorists to slow down.
Winds gusts of up to 120kph continued to lash the county last night with trees felled in several areas again including in Ramelton, St Johnston, Convoy and Donegal Town.
Many roads are flooded around the county with Gardai issuing warnings about several areas including around Killybegs, Ardara, Glenties, Pettigo, Bundoran, Ballyshannon, Letterkenny, Inishowen, the Twin Towns and Gaoth Dobhair.
Torrential rain has left many roads treacherous. There are huge pools of water at Drumoghill on the N14 between Lifford and Letterkenny, and a tree is blocking the road just outside St Johnston.
One hotel guest at Solas Lough Eske Castle in Donegal Town escaped uninjured when a tree came crashing down on his BMW car in the hotel carpark.
Met Eireann recorded a gust of more than 100km/hr at Malin Head last night; with a gust of 89.3km/hr at Finner Camp.
The winds will ease later this afternoon, Thursday. It will be milder and less windy over the weekend with some forecasts saying we might actually get some dry weather – so we can all get outdoors and breathe again!
“For Thursday the winds will be light to moderate and westerly. During Friday they might pick up a little during the day, but will ease again later on and will be mostly moderate and will continue westerly,” said a Met Eireann spokeswoman.
“This is normal weather for this time of the year. We just got used to the snow for a couple of years and forgotten that this is normally what we get.”
