Priest issues suicide warning

A leading Donegal priest and well-known counselor has warned that the county is facing an increase in suicides if the economic woes continue.

Fr James Sweeney that cuts in the mental health sector cannot continue.

Fr Sweeney was speaking following a number of suicides across the county in recent weeks and months.

 

Life cycle

Coillte is examining plans to open a mountain bike trail in Corravaddy on the outskirts of Letterkenny.

The plan is one of a number being considered around the country with the Donegal Mountain Biking Club also backing the plan.

 

New Principal

Maeve Sweeney form Dunfanaghy is to begin her new role as the principal of Pobalscoil Falcarragh next Monday. Ms Sweeney is a former pupil of the school and takes over form Patsy McVicar who has retired after 38 years service.

 

More redundancies at council

Up to 40 more county council staff are now considering taking retirement this February. The move comes as council officials continue to balance budgets. More than 400 staff have left Donegal County Council over the past three years.

 

On the right road

A Ballybofey student is part of a team from Sligo IT who have invented a road safety device which Gardai say could save countless lives.

Aine Conaghan helped design the device which will monitor if a motorist is driving wrecklessly and report it to a designated person.
