DONEGAL COUPLE CANCELLED DREAM CRUISE ON DOOMED SHIP

A Donegal couple who were due to be on the stricken cruise-liner which sank at the weekend cancelled at the last minute.

Geraldine and Eamon Crossan from Manorcunningham had due to be on the Costa Concordia when it hit rocks killing at least five people.

Geraldine revealed how the couple were due to be boarding the liner in Barcelona today for a dream cruise.

However Geraldine told the Shaun Doherty Show on Highland Radio that they had originally planned to travel last week on husband Eamon’s birthday – on Friday the 13th!

She said they were left shocked and shaken when contacted on Saturday morning last by their travel agent telling them about the doomed ship.

“We had our suitcases packed and we were ready to go. And then on Saturday morning our travel agent contacted us and asked us if we had heard anything about the boat.

“We hadn’t and she told us and we couldn’t believe it. We were straight onto the internet to see what had happened and we were shocked,” she said.

Mum-of-two Geraldine revealed how the couple aren’t superstitious but had decided not to travel on Friday the 13th.

“We were due to travel last week originally because we liked to be away for Eamon’s birthday but we didn’t to put it back a week.

“We had a few things on including Eamon’s birthday and we were doing up the house so we didn’t travel. We aren’t superstitious but we might be now,” laughed a relieved Geraldine.

The Donegal woman said she was very sad to see what had happened and her thoughts were with all those who had lost loved ones on the boat.

However Geraldine said the tragedy would certainly not put her off travelling on cruise ships in future.

“We travelled on a cruise last year and we really enjoyed it. You see so many places.

“We found it cheap and cheerful and it’s real value for money.

“Last weekend’s tragedy certainly wouldn’t put us off but I think it will certainly put some people off,” she said.
