MORE THAN 1,000 APPLY FOR CARETAKER’S JOBS AT LETTERKENNY IT

More than 1,000 people have applied for caretaker’s jobs at the Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT).

The huge number of job applicants applied for applications forms for the positions at the leading college.

College bosses were flooded with requests for applications forms for two positions – caretaker and maintenance supervisor.

The caretaker’s job has a salary of between €503 and €524 a week before tax while the maintenance supervisor’s role offers a salary of between €674 and €713.

A spokesman for the college said the large number of applications for the positions was a “sign of the times.”

“They are good positions but we did receive a large number of requests for applications forms – somewhere in the region of one thousand.

“The actual number of people who completed the applications forms was substantially lower however,” said the spokesman.

The deadline for job applications was December 9th and the Human Resources office at the college is now dealing with applications.

One man who applied for the caretaker’s position said ANY full-time job was now hard to come by.

The man, who had his own building company, said he would normally never have applied for such a position.

“It’s not the kind of money I would even have thought of applying for during the building boom.

“But it’s a job and it’s steady money and that is all anybody is looking for these days.

“A number of people I know applied for it but there’s a huge amount of interest so I’ll be lucky if I get an interview even,” he said.
