SENATOR Brian O Domhnaill is in a meeting with lawyers in Dublin this evening, after saying he is the victim of a ‘smear campaign’.
He told donegaldaily.com that allegations that he did not make proper expenses claims when he was a county councillor in 2006 were “defamatory, libellous and part of a smear campaign.”
He said he knew the sources of the smears and expressed “utter shock” that “these smears have been published today without any basic checks.”
Donegal county council says it is duty bound to investigate correspondence sent to it about the Senator but a source stressed: “This is being looked at because we have to. There is no suggestion whatosever that it is anything more than that.”
Senator O Domhnaill told us: “This is nothing but a political smear campaign and it will be exposed when my name is cleared by the council which I am totally confident will be the outcome.”
Sources told us the Senator believed that linking the claims to others who were found to have made improper claims were “outrageous.”
The source added: “Brian is angry that these rumours which have circulated by political enemies have been given any currency whatsoever. He is meeting a solicitor shortly.”
