More than 1,000people have now signed a petition in honour of a donkey which died from neglect in Donegal recently.

Bobby the donkey was found in a pitiful state in sheds close to Fanad Lighthouse recently.

He was rescued and taken to the Raphoe Donkey Sanctuary but died a short time later.

He had been left in mud and was also tramped on by bulls which had been put into the same shed.

Another donkey which had been housed with Bobby is still missing.

Animal-lovers launched an on-line petition to remember Bobby and to have a statue built close to Fanad Lighthouse to remind people that cruelty to animals is still a serious issue.

The organisers of the campaign are now planning how the petition will be presented to Government.

“It is wonderful to see how many good people in this world cared about one little donkey’s short and pitiful life.

Please God that change will come and that people will not be allowed to ignore the basic needs of vulnerable and trusting animals,” said a spokesman.
