NUI Galway is hoping people from Co Donegal with back pain will take part in a trial programme at the university’s Centre for Pain Research.
The Pain Disability Prevention Programme is funded by the HSE and will take place in locations in counties Galway, Dublin, Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Limerick and Cork.
The university is also hoping to encourage GPs and physiotherapists Donegal to refer suitable patients to the study.
Those involved will be offered a number of free sessions with a clinical psychologist, which will focus on physical and psychological methods to try to help the patient.
The researchers said they are specifically interested in people who have had back pain for less than 12 months and are either working less or not at all due to the pain.
