ROADS FUNDING: WILL YOU BE SEEING SOME FRESH TARMAC?

LOCAL and regional roads funding in Co Donegal has been slashed by €1.5M, it has been announced.

Specific road improvementa are however being funded for the Airport Road, Killybegs Industrial Road, St. Johnston – Tullyowen Road and Tir Chonaill Bridge in Donegal Town.

Some road safety projects in areas such as Letterkenny, Stranorlar, Dungloe, Redcastle, Newtown, and Quigleys Point will go ahead.

The newly elected chair of the Roads Strategic Policy Committee on Donegal Co Council Cora Harvey said the cutbacks would hit everyone – and frustrate most of us.

“This combined with our local revenue budget which the council passed last December will have a huge detrimental effect on our Counties Roads,” said Cllr Harvey.

“At present many secondary roads are pot hole fuelled and is need of urgent repair. The reality now is that people will have to endure poor road conditions for another year. Councillors will find themselves again pulling their hair out trying spread the money around.

“All we want is our roads to be off an acceptable standard, people are paying high car tax’s and feel very aggrieved.”

More than €21M will be spent on the county roads this year.
