MAN CHARGED WITH ATTACKING EASONS SHOP ASSISTANT

February 13, 2012

A man has been remanded in custody after an Easons bookstore employee was seriously assaulted.

Lee Mitchell, 31, is charged with causing criminal damage to a cash register at Eason’s Bookstore in Letterkenny on Saturday evening last, February 11th.

Mitchell, of 3 Glencar Park, Letterkenny, was also charged with assaulting an shop-assistant and causing her harm during the same incident.

Mitchell was also charged with two other robberies, both at the Glencar Express Shop in Glencar, Letterkenny on January 9th and 24th last.

Solicitor for the accused Mr Paudge Dorrian applied for bail in the case at Letterkenny District Court today.

However this was strongly objected to by Garda Inspector Garda David Kelly.

Inspector Kelly said he had concerns as there have been 21 bench warrants issued for Mitchell in the past.

Solicitor Dorrian said Mitchell had a drug addiction and that this would only get worse in Castlerea Prison where, he claimed, drugs were available.

“Dooming him to Castelrea Prison is dooming him to addiction,” said Mr Dorrian.

However Judge Paul Kelly said he had been released on bail before and had offended on a number of occasions since.

He remanded him to Castlerea Prison to appear at Letterkenny District Court on February 20th next.
