The Alliance Champion is Odran McGettigan from Strabane, The Nett winner is Clive Davison from Letterkenny and the Gross winner is Enda Kennedy from Rosapenna.
Next Competition is Captains (Mr Noel Callan’s) Day in Rosapenna G.C.on Saturday 24th March 2012.
The extremely poor Golfing weather continued to affect the Alliance this season when once again the playing conditions at Dunfanaghy proved to be difficult in the extreme with a swirling wind which seemed to be against you on the way out on the first nine and against on the back nine as well .The very harsh wintery showers added to the discomfort .It really pays tribute to the lay out that Harry Varden a 6 times open winner designed back in 1905 .The improvements being carried out in accordance with Paul McGinley’s(that’s THE Paul not with apologies to the Head Green keeper whose shares the same names with the illustrious Golfer) suggestions .Paul ,the head green keepers skill in constructing the riveted bunkers is very evident.
At least this time out unlike the last two competitions the 60 odd competitors were able to return completed cards and some good returns were made. It is a credit to these hardiest of competitors that they have adapted to the difficult chore of playing winter golf. Once again an inter club competition on a neighbouring club had to be abandoned.
While the Alliance champion was determined last time out the runner up positions in the Nett and the Gross were settled to-day and how the runners up triumphed as they both made sure of their prize by winning their sections. So Odran McGettigan is the alliance champion for 2011-12 and Enda Kennedy the gross winner it was Clive Davison who was the nett runner up and Michael McGeady who was runner up in the Gross section.
In the gross it has been a constant battle for pride of place when the following three have played on the same day I refer to Enda Kennedy, Connor Mallon and Michael McGeady and to-day was no different While Connor and Michael got off to steady starts Enda was flying with a birdie at the first but a double bogie at the third slowed him down .In the difficult playing conditions level par was the order of the day and after 9 Michael was out in 35 one ahead of the other two. Connor joined him at the top of the leader board when he birdied the 10th .However Michael was so consistent in carding pars that the only shots and there was 2 of them that he dropped were at the par 5 16 .Enda had successive bogies at 12 and 13 plus one at 17 Connor also dropped three strokes on the back nine at 14, 15 and 16.
So Michael was 2 shots clear and Enda took runner up on a break of tie with Connor.
While there were many great shots played probably the best of all was the three wood played into the teeth of the gale, to 4 foot and the putt sunk for a birdie at the 230 yard par three 7th aptly named Canon, by former local club Captain Keith Lapsley.
In the nett the pressure was on Letterkenny men Clive Davison and Michael O’Donnell and John Callan from Ballycastle who were tied on the same number of points in the Golfer of the season competition. In the event Clive got 10, Michael got 3 and John 1 leaving Clive the winner of this particular cameo in the nett section.
Clive put on quite a performance he had just the one double bogie on his card while Michael not only had 2 double bogies he also carded a triple. This at the 13th par three the 7th par three was also unkind to him .After 9 Clive was out in level par nett while Michael and John were just the one behind. However while Clive dropped just 5 more to come in 2 under his handicap Michael parred just one more hole to be 5 over nett John also had a horrid time finishing 6 over nett.
The runner up in today’s nett Competition was the affable Strabane Member Eugene Corry who manages to get on the winners list each year .He had a very tidy round .His only double bogey coming at the par 5 16th that quite a number had problems with. Still a round in which you play to your handicap is always credible. No doubt he will remember his round at Dunfanaghy with pride when he reflects on it.
The season comes to a conclusion in three weeks’ time on Saturday24 th March when the Captains (Mr Noel Callans) Prize will be played for in Rosapenna Golf Club.
There are quite a number of Prizes to be played for and the display table will be quite crowded as John, in nautical terms, has really pushed the boat out.
