Donegal Youth Service today officially unveiled plans for the first ‘Intercultural Youth Day’ for the County which will take place in Swan’s Park, Buncrana on Saturday 28th July 2012.
Julie McGrory, Project Co-Ordinator of the ‘Cross Border Connections’ Project and Organiser of the event said ‘We have successfully secured funding from Phase II of the Peace III Plan to run this exciting youth day along with a number of other activities and workshops for Young throughout Donegal and the border Counties over the next year’
She added, ‘Groups of young people will arrive by bus, on the morning of the event, accompanied by their Youth Leaders and will participate in a ‘Carnival style’ event through the main street in Buncrana.
The groupo will use masks, dance and music to share the message of inter-culturalism, identity, belonging, individualism and diversity, before moving to Swans Park where there will be a family style event with live music and entertainment.
“We are projecting that approximately 400 young people will visit Buncrana on that day. This will be a strictly alcohol free event and open to all young people in the area as well as their families.”
Donegal Youth Service are hopeful that this will become a Community Mobilisation Event, with other Youth organisations, Sporting Associations, Artists, Schools and charities running activities on this day as well. They will host an information evening in Inishowen Development Partnership Buncrana at 7pm on 4th April for groups or organisations who would like to learn more or get involved.
Donegal Youth Service has been delivering Cross Border Cross Community Peace and Reconciliation focused youth work for 12 years and is continuing this work through Phase II of the Peace III programme. Cross Border Connections is a PEACE III Phase II funded project managed by Donegal Youth Service through the Donegal Community Based Youth Work Consortium.
The Project is supported by the Peace III programme and managed for the special EU programme body by Donegal County Council.
