SINN FÉIN TD Padraig MacLochlainn has launched a scathing attack on political corruption in Ireland – and a defence of Fianna Fáil grassroots supporters.
Deputy MacLochlainn was speaking in the wake of the damning Mahon Tribunal final report was has left the reputation of ex-Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in tatters.
The report also found against other senior members of Fianna Fáil, as well as Fine Gael and Labour councillors.
No allegations ever emerged in relation to Co Donegal in the Mahon investigation.
Asked by donegaldaily.com for his view, Deputy MacLochlainn told us: “The Mahon report is a damning indictment of the culture of corruption and entitlement that has poisoned politics in this state for so long.
Being elected as a public representative is a privilege and should be a vocation. What has emerged now from tribunal report after tribunal report amounts to an outright betrayal of our people”
“The ordinary decent grassroots members of Fianna Fáil were betrayed by their leaders over almost three decades and in turn the hundreds of thousands of people across Ireland who put their trust in Fianna Fáil were betrayed.”
The Donegal North East TD went on: “This insidious relationship between Government and big business is of course the very reason why the Irish people have lost our economic sovereignty today. Is this what our heroes of 1916 and the War of Independence fought and died for?”
“The task for all of us in politics today is to ensure that this is never allowed to happen again. It will take along time for people to trust the political process again.”
No investigations, garda inquiries or probes have ever emerged in Co Donegal.
