UPDATED: The Can’t Pay, Won’t Pay campaign is calling for a massive show of defiance against the Household and Septic Tank Charges tomorrow when a protest march will take place in Letterkenny.
The march will begin from the Tesco roundabout at 3pm and will proceed to the Market Square where a number of speakers will address the crowd.
The demonstration takes place as The Can’t Pay, Won’t Pay campaign welcomed the latest low payment figures for the Household Charge. At the close of business yesterday only 313,341 households have registered.
Francis Mc Cafferty of the campaign steering committee said: “Despite all the threats and the stepping up of the government’s media campaign, nearly 1.5 million households still have not registered.
“We are calling on the public in Donegal to come out in force and march in Letterkenny tomorrow to help us deliver a final a nail in the coffin to the hated Household tax.”
Micheal Mc Giolla Easbuig of the campaign steering committee said “This demonstration gives people the chance to send a strong message to the government that we will not be bullied or intimidated into paying.
The government are showing signs of increasing desperation when they look at the very low levels of payment of the Household Tax. With a little more than a week to go there are still more than 1.4 million households who have not registered.”
“It is clear the government will wake up to a huge headache after March 31st when hundreds of thousands of people across the country have refused to foot the bill for the bondholders. Minister Hogan’s threats to ‘track down’ non-payers will be hollow in the face of determined opposition from the strong and united campaign all across the country.”
Meanwhile Thomas Pringle TD has said he will join the demonstration and urged the public to do the same. “The weapon the government is relying on is fear and we can now see many people are no longer afraid. I hope that those who are opposed to the charges will come out in big numbers on Saturday and let their voices be heard.”
Micheal Mc Giolla Easbuig said that the campaign had now built up an unstoppable momentum. “We are seeing many people who have not been involved in any form of protest before telling us they will come on the march. The momentum is now with the boycott campaign and we are confident that we are winning.”
