AN POST BOSS TO ANSWER QUESTIONS OVER CLOSURE OF DONEGAL POST OFFICES

The CEO of An Post is to be asked about the closure of post offices across the country including Laghey and Menalaragh in Co Donegal.

Donegal Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has confirmed that the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture will request the attendance of the Donal Connell to discuss the persistent closures of rural post offices.

Senator Ó Domhnaill who is a member of the committee said: “I am anxious to ensure that the Chief Executive of An Post, Donal Connell, comes before the Committee as soon as possible.

“There are genuine concerns about the company’s policy to close small rural post offices and the way in which this policy is being executived.

“The post offices in Laghey and Meenlaragh were closed over the past number of months without adequate advance notice or local consultation, and this has been devastating for the community,” he said.

He added that the impact on communities of losing such a basic amenity is significant.

“This is not just about the services that post offices provide; the post office is also focal point of the community. At this time, when rural communities are being targeted for severe cuts to services, many communities feel that the loss of the post office is another nail in the coffin.”
