In 1956, Robinson McNally (Roy) Malseed travelled to England, Ireland, and Scotland and wrote several letters to his family to document his journey.
He wrote the following account of his travel and search for family history in County Donegal.
And on his journey he talks about meeting staff members from Oatfield Sweets – including the legendary Bert Davidson who went from factory floor to Managing Director in a career spanning 50 years at the plan.
Roy’s letters back to Australia on his seven days in Co Donegal gave a fascinating insight into the county half a century ago.
He was born in Victoria in 1890 and was 66 when he visited Ireland. He went on to live until he was 87, passing away in 1977.
He is pictured above after his marriage in 1912 to his wife Nance.
For young and old alike – but particularly for those interested in local social history – the letters are a must read.
