TAOISEACH ENDA Kenny is throwing his weight behind Donegal’s diaspora projects – saying they have a massive tourism potential.
And he is particularly supporting the Gallagher clan reunion which is due to take place in Donegal in September next year.
Mr Kenny said events nationwide could help lure descendants of 70 million people worldwide to the country.
“This is actually a brilliant opportunity for the country to unite, north and south, in standing up to the economic challenge that we have,” he said.
“We are calling now on every community, from city suburbs to rural villages, as well as clubs, associations and businesses to start thinking about how they might work together to develop events which celebrate their own unique stories and engage connections around the world.”
The Gathering Ireland 2013 will feature similar events to the Gallagher reunion throughout the country.
The Government hopes that together they can attract an extra 325,000 visitors – bringing in €180M in extra revenue. Riverdance creators John McColgan and Moya Doherty are also planning a new show which will premiere in 2013.
The gatherings are being supported by Google, Facebook and a number of other multinational companies.
Tourism Minister Leo Varadkar also invited the world to Ireland next year for events.
“These range from family gatherings, school reunions and even a gathering of twins,” he said.
“Towns and communities are also pitching in.”
