PLANS TO TURN OATFIELD FACTORY INTO MUSEUM ON ROCKS

Plans to turn the Oatfield Sweet plant into a museum now appear to have floundered after much of the equipment was removed for the Port Road factory.

Members of Letterkenny Town Council slammed the owners of Oatfield Sweets, Zed Candy and their landlords Donegal Creameries.

The company will move production to England on May 27th next after almost 100 years of production.

Cllr Ciaran Brogan suggested trying to set up a museum on the site which was unanimously supported.

Cllr Dessie Larkin said there was probably no chance of saving the plant – even as a museum to the famous confectionary brand.

“The people involved have said let’s get things out and get things dismantled. It’s a quick action and a quick removal,” said Cllr Dessie Larkin.

There are currently 15 people employed at the plant.

The company was famous around the world for many different brands of sweets including the Emerald toffee.
