COASTGUARD WARNING AS YACHTS STAGE DRAMATIC RESCUE ON LOUGH SWILLY

THE crew of a motor boat adrift in rough conditions in Lough Swilly are safe and well after a dramatic rescue today.

Several Fahan-based yachts spotted the craft in distress off Fort Dunree.

It’s thought the motor on the vessel had seized and it was adrift several miles off the coast.

Yachts in the area went to the rescue and managed to cast a rope onto the broken motorboat and tow it to safety.

Our picture shows the yachts as they arrived with the motorboat behind it close to a beach off Otway Golf Club.

Although it is very sunny today, high easterly winds are causing problems along the coast.

A Coastguard spokesman warned: “Seas are rough today on our loughs and right around the coast due to the high winds.

“The sunny weather can be deceptive and we would warn small crafts to be extremely careful in these conditions.”

Met Eireann had earlier issued a small craft warning due to the high winds.
