Buncrana GAA Notes For Week Ending Sunday 3rd June

Congratulations: Pride of place this week must go to the U14 Hurlers who were victorious over St. Eunan’s in the A League Final. The game was an extremely tight affair where space was at a premium with both defences on top. Playing with the wind Buncrana were up 0-4 to 0-1 at half time. St. Eunans started brightly in the second half but Buncrana were able to reply to each score. In a tense closing quarter and after both sides missed goal opportunities, Buncrana got the decisive and only goal of the game. The final score was Buncrana 1-8 St. Eunan’s 0-4. A great achievement for the club, well done to all the lads and the coaches.

Sponsored Walk: The club will be having a sponsored walk on Bank Holiday Monday at 3.00pm, from the Scarvey to Father Hegarty’s Rock and back. Sponsorship cards are available from club secretary Pauline Grant. Everyone is welcome. Participants who are under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

U12 Football: The U12′ team had their second league game of the season on Monday against Lifford. The ‘A’ team had a comfortable win against a Lifford team, who have to be praised for their efforts to the end with full back Deasan Stewart and midfield James Russell playing well for them. Buncrana players Aaron McDaid, Keegan Hegarty and Niall Doherty playing well for the home team. The ‘B’ team also won well with good performances from Gavin Robb, Jamie Brosan and Jack Doherty. Next league match on Monday 28th against Newtowncunningham. Bus leaving the Scarvey at 5.30 sharp. Training continues each Tuesday at 7.30-8.30pm and each friday 7.00-8.00pm.

Senior Football: Buncrana 0-18 Downings 3-8

Buncrana continued their recent run of good form on Friday night, with a victory over Downings. The home side got off to a blistering start and chalked up 4 unanswered points in the opening ten minute period. The return of county player Ryan Bradley to club action was a great boost to Buncrana. Bradley and Odhran Doherty dominated midfield in the first half, their attacking runs and accurate passing setting up scores for impressive young inside forwards Ryan Curran, Kevin Treacy and experienced full forward Paul McGonigle. Further scores were added for Buncrana by Oisin Doherty, Odhran Doherty and Ryan Curran before Downings found the net shortly before half-time to narrow the deficit to 6 points.

Downings opened the second half brightly registering a point with their first attack. However, Buncrana responded with the accurate shooting of Ryan Bradley, Odhran Doherty and Oisin Doherty. A long hopeful ball into the Downings full forward line created confusion in the home defence and resulted in a second goal, leaving 4 points between the sides. There was further worry for Buncrana after Downings were awarded a penalty with 5 minutes remaining, which they converted. With the minimum between the sides Buncrana managed to hold on to collect the 2 points and will be happy with the overall performance, with scores coming from 7 different players. Excellent for Buncrana throughout were, Odhran Doherty, Ryan Bradley, Kevin O’Loughlin, Kevin Treacy, Ryan Curran and Calvin Jones.
