A table quiz in An Grianan Hotel, Burt on Thursday 21st June is just one of a number of fund raising events being planned by Newtown-based Practice Nurse, Lorraine Porter, as she prepares for her 60-mile three-day walk in aid of breast cancer research later this year.
The local Clinical Nurse Specialist who works at Newtowncunningham Health Centre, will complete the 60-mile walk in Philadelphia in October as part of Carmel’s Crew – a team put together by her sister-in-law Carmel Bradley (Porter) who is a breast cancer survivor.
“When the Relay for Life event was taking place in Letterkenny recently I was really inspired by the number of my patients and their families who were out there doing something positive for cancer research so I was delighted to get the opportunity to join Carmel’s Crew,” Lorraine said.
She explained that Carmel had taken part in the walk with her crew two years ago, shortly after undergoing treatment.
“At the time we organised some fund raising events here to help Carmel’s Crew but going over and actually taking part in the walk will really make me feel like part of the team.”
Lorraine explained that the Susan G Komen charity is one of the biggest global breast cancer charities in the world and has helped fund every major step in the battle against breast cancer over the past thirty years.
“The fight against breast cancer is a global fight and this charity funds research that will hopefully find a cure. I’m delighted to be taking part with the hope that the money I raise here will be of some help towards ultimately finding that cure. The reaction I have received already has been amazing and I’m really looking forward to the walk now,” she added.
Lorraine who recently completed the Flora Mini Marathon in Dublin as part of her preparation for the walk says planning the fund raising events will go hand in hand with her training schedule over the next number of weeks.
“I have paid for my own flight and because I’ll be staying with family members I won’t have accommodation costs so everything raised will go directly towards breast cancer research, it’s just a matter of getting as much as possible raised now,” she added.
As well as the quiz night in An Grianan, Lorraine’s parents are hosting a coffee afternoon in their home at Magheracloy, St Johnston on Saturday 30th June, while she’s also planning a music session in August.
“I was thrilled to hear that a quiz has been organised for June 21st by the people of Newtown and Burt and I hope as many teams as possible will come along now on the night. There will be a few more events over the weeks ahead as well and I’m really hoping to raise as much as possible for this worthy cause.” Lorraine concluded.
