MY DONEGAL…….. WITH AINE NI BHREISLEAIN, TG4

written by Stephen Maguire July 6, 2012

Aine Ni Bhreisleain is the television anchor for TG4 in Co Donegal. A well-known Irish-language journalist, she has covered many of the county’s biggest news stories in recent years.

What is your favourite place in Donegal and why?

My favourite place has to be Inis Sionnaigh Island, just off the coast of Gweedore. It is the nicest island I have visited in Ireland with beautiful beaches, great for swimming and picnics and on a sunny day there is nowhere like it. The island has one cottage and I have been going there since I was a baby , so it has a lot of great memories for me .

If you could change one thing about Donegal what would it be?

Better roads!

Who is the one person in Donegal that you look up to and why?

I can’t pick one- so I would have to say my parents

Daniel O’Donnell or Packie Bonner?

Daniel O’Donnell!

What has been Donegal’s proudest moment in recent years?

I think sporting achievements help to showcase a county, and Donegal has great supporters in all disciplines- probably winning the GAA Ulster final in 2011 was such a boost to the county- it left people on a high

What was Donegal’s saddest moment?

I think recent scandals regarding child abuse, both clerical and otherwise would have to be the lowest moments for the county.

What is your favourite Donegal-made product?

Simple Simon snacks !

Who is Donegal’s greatest ambassador around the world and why?

A tie between Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Daniel O’Donnell and Moya Brennan – they all promote the county in different ways, with Mairéad and Moya doing a lot for the language and the Gaeltacht areas in particular. They can reach so many people with their concerts , and do a lot for this county

Who is Donegal’s most successful businessperson in your opinion?

Liam Ó Cuinneagáin, from Oideas Gael- He , along with Seosamh Watson made Irish classes for adults and complete beginners something very fun, interesting and profitable for the South West of the county. Gleann Cholmcille is always buzzing when the courses are on, and so many of the students come back time and time again from places like Japan, Germany and America . It seems like more than just a business to Liam and it invests something in the community, while using local heritage and amenities to keep the courses interesting .Most people would think running a business in a rural, remote loaction was crazy, but it has proven a great move.

Who is your favourite Donegal sportsperson of all time?

I can’t choose- too many greats in this county!

What is your favourite Donegal restaurant?

Danny Minnies in Annagry. It is a lovely location and the food is great

Donegal’s golden eagles or basking sharks?

Golden eagles- as I have yet to see a basking shark in real life!

Your nomination for Donegal’s most stylish person?

The model Faye Dinsmore

What is your favourite Donegal saying or expression?

The use of the word ‘wild’ in sentences always stumps non Donegal people !

Will Donegal win the All Ireland this year?

We live in hope!

What is your favourite Donegal food?

Any local seafood

Is there anything that really annoys you about Donegal or its people?

Begrudgery- although that could be an Irish trait in general!

If you had a million euro to spend on improving something in Donegal, what would it be?

It wouldn’t go far, but improving the roads would help !
