Weedkiller
The environment group MEAS Iarthuaisceart are asking people to use weedkiller sparingly. It seems to be the growing trend in our local countryside now where we see large swathes of ground and numerous verges and drains with the ugly colour of burnt orange during the summertime… We would say that the spraying of footpaths and around buildings is more than enough use of this poison. Weedkiller was not developed to spray on large open areas such as whole fields and along the verges of roads and in drains. This chemical not only ‘kills off’ the ‘weeds’ (these so-called weeds are essential to certain ecosystems) but it also kills off every living thing in the area of soil that was sprayed i.e. insects above AND below ground including the humble earthworm. If birds or little creatures such as the pygmy shrew eat these dead insects will they not be infected too? The weedkiller basically sterilises the ground and leaves it completely baron. We are also concerned that this ‘practice’ may be having an effect on the bee population. Bees such as bumble bees, burrowing bees as well as honey bees are very important to farmers and all food growers as they are the crucial link between the flowering plants and pollination which then produces the fruit, vegetables and certain crops that human beings need to survive. There is no other creature that does this vital job. The bee populations of the world are in decline and we feel that the spraying of weedkiller is not helping the matter. Since it is a man made chemical and is classed as a ‘poison’ the weedkiller may also affect the health of both animals and humans. We feel it should only be used as a last resort and not the lazy way to clear large areas of ground. Please use weedkiller sparingly! www.meas-it.com
