THERE is widespread shock and grief in a Co Donegal town today after a 25-year-old man killed in a traffic accident overnight died just 100 yards from where his cousin was killed 20 years ago.
The victim, named locally as Shane McMonagle, died when his car struck a telegraph post at around 4.25am at Carnagarve, just outside Moville.
No other vehicles were involved in the incident which killed the popular local and well-known DJ.
Shane’s cousin Mark McMonagle was killed not far from the scene of this morning’s incident two decades ago.
He was a pedestrian who was out walking along the road when a car came around the corner and killed him.
“This is just dreadful news for the McMonagle family,” said one local on Moville’s main street today.
“Everyone is just in deep shock. Shane was a grand fella and his death is a dreadful reminder of the death of his cousin Mark.
“Our prayers and sympathies are with his entire family circle today.”
Superintendent Kevin English said the investigation is continuing into the incident. The car had left the road and was spotted by two witnesses.
“We would like to offer our sympathies to the family,” he said.
Said a Garda spokesperson: “Gardai in Buncrana are investigating a single vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred at Greencastle Road, Moville at approximately 4.25a.m. this morning 19th July, 2012.
“A man in his mid 20′s was fatally injured when his car left the road and collided with a telegraph pole. He has been removed to Letterkenny General Hospital.
“The road has been closed pending completion of an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Local diversions are in place but please note that no articulated lorries or heavy good vehicles will have access between Moville & Greencastle in both directions untill the road re-opens.”
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Buncrana Garda Station on 074 – 9320540, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station. Forensic officers are at the scene which has been cordoned off.
