More than HALF of the money donated during the recent Relay for Life cancer fundraising event will be spent directly on Donegal cancer patients.

A spokesman has confirmed more than €200,000 of the €350,000 plus raised will go directly to services in the county while the balance will go towards national research.

Mairead Lyons of the Irish Cancer Society said she was happy to set the record straight.

It follows queries by a number of cancer groups in Co Donegal questioning where the money was being spent.

Betty Holmes of the Donegal Action for Cancer Care said she welcomed the confirmation on where exactly the money was going to be spent.

However she added “We in Donegal have to ensure that anything happens that we keep cancer patients to the fore because we are not always remembered.”

Robert O’Connor of Donegal Relay for Life said there had never been a promise given that ALL the money raised in Donegal would be spent on services in the county.

A large amount of money is money raised by the ICS goes towards providing night nursing services.

Last year there were 85 nights of care in Co Donegal by nurses provided by the ICS.

A large amount of money raised in Donegal will also go towards the setting up of a Daffodil Centre in Letterkenny.
