Senator Jimmy says that the campaign to keep Lifford Hospital open is a testament to the local community in the Lifford area.

The Labour Party politician was speaking after the HSE said it was looking at plans considering a North South forum to possibly keep the hospital open.

A report on the viability of the plan, which could see the catchment area of Strabane use Lifford Hospital, will be delivered in September.

Senator Harte said ” I commend the people of the Lifford and surrounding areas who have passionately campaigned for the retention of the hospital which is an important part of the community and provides an invaluable step down facility for Letterkenny General Hospital.

“The Friends of Lifford Hospital Committee have worked hard with the local GP’s to formulate a plan to upgradeand develop the facility and having a cross border dimension to this is to be welcomed.

“I spoke today to the HSE and some members of the committee and I look forward to getting progress on the retention of the hospital.”
