THE HSE failed to respond to a bid to save the Donegal-Dublin hospital bus.
The service finally ended yesterday.
But donegaldaily.com can now reveal that Marleys Coach Hire which had the contract for the service offered to cut its costs in HALF in a last minute bid to save the service.
It was charging €100,000-a-year – but said that after talking with patients and relatives, it would cut that fee to €50,000 a year.
This has now been confirmed by bus operator Francis Marley.
“Patients paid €12.50 for each journey and offered to pay more and we looked at our costs and made the offer to the HSE last week but we never got a response,” he said.
There is considerable anger at the HSE decision which means patients will now have to use public buses and then use taxis to get to hospitals once they are in Dublin.
