Buncrana GAA Notes For Week Ending Sunday 5th August
Congratulations: History was made in a rain soaked Letterkenny on Sunday night, when a the youthful Scarvey squad claimed the club’s first Donegal Hurling Minor Championship title. This was a highly unexpected win due to the unavailability of some key players. The absence of Tom Clare (hols), Jack O Loughlin (hols), Aedan Stokes and Sean Mc Fadden (inj), and John Campbell, left Buncrana with only 15 available players. Even more pleasing to the management is the age profile of the team as only 3 players are overage next year. The Buncrana team set the tempo from the start and their never-say-die attitude was the difference in the end as neither side gave an inch. Setanta from Killygordan went into the game as red hot favorites having already beaten this Buncrana side at u14 and u16 championship final’s in previous years. Caoimhin Mac Lochlainn started in his unfamiliar role and did well throughout. He was flanked by u16 players Darren (Roe) Doherty and Paul Nelson, who battled hard throughout. Buncrana captain Dónal Óg Mac Lochlainn led by example throughout and was a rock in the second half. The halfback line of Conor Grant, Dermot Doherty and Daniel Wilson where immense and will be happy with their performance. Midfield duo of Stephen Nelson and Jamie McLaughlin (1pt) where the launch pad of many successful attacks. Conor McCormick lined out at half forward and was equally adapt at clearing a ball out of defense as he was in attack. Michael Farrell (1pt) worked tirelessly throughout. The full forward line of Denver Coyle, Patrick Kelly and Sean Deery fought hard against a strong Setanta back line. Sam (Roe) Doherty would have been the pick of the forwards, his youthful years did not prevent him matching the physical strength of the Setanta outfit and was ever reliable from the dead ball scoring 7pts, (6 f’s). This side will undoubtedly form the back bone of any future Buncrana Senior Hurling Side. The management would like to thank the squad as they where a pleasure to work with all year and they are a credit to their families and the Club. This is not the end of the line for this squad as in October they will field in the Ulster Club Hurling Championship. Halftime score was 0.5 to 1.1, Final score 0:9 to 1:5.
