REID LOOKS FORWARD TO CHARITY NIGHT AS HE DREAMS OF ALL-IRELAND GLORY AGAIN

With GAA fever hitting the county, what better way to celebrate Donegal’s All Ireland efforts than to honour the last team to win the title.

A limited number or tickets are still available for a charity night which will mark the 20th anniversary since Donegal won the All-Ireland senior football title in 1992.

The event, which takes place in the Abbey Hotel, Donegal Town on Saturday week, August 18th, has been organised by a number of the players who were part of the Donegal team which won the Sam Maguire.

The three charities which will benefit from the night are The Donegal Hospice, Alzheimers Association Donegal branch and Living Links.

One of the organisers, Donal Reid, who was right-half back on the history-making team, says the fact Donegal have made it through to the All-Ireland semi-final against Cork later this month has helped the profile of the event.

“Donegal went 19 years without and Ulster title, and we have now won two in successive seasons which has given the entire county a huge lift in what are difficult times,” he comments.

“There’s a great feel-good factor around the county and that has certainly increased the the interest on the night which a few of us came together and organised a few months back. All the players are really looking forward to it and it will be nice for us all to meet up again to mark our All-Ireland win,” he says.

“But the night is all about the charities and how much money we can raise for these groups who are always in need of financial support.”

“There has been a bit of confusion about the dress code, but it’s important to point out that it’s only the players who will have to adhere to the black tie dress code – those coming along to the event can choose their own style!,” he says.

On the afternoon of the 18th, supporters will have an opportunity to meet the players, while the Sam Maguire will also be on display.

“We are hoping that Sam will be back for a longer stay in September,” Donal states.

All members of the squad will be presented with a framed page of their profile which have appeared in the Donegal Democrat as part of a special series courtesy of Donegal Democrat and RTE Raidio na Gaeltachta.

Tickets for the ball, priced €25, are still available from the following outlets – Abbey Hotel, Donegal Town; Supervalu, Killybegs; Divers Newsagents, Ardara; Books and Charts, Dungloe; Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny and SuperValu, Buncrana.

Retired RTE commentator, Michael O Muircheartaigh and Highland Radio’s Charlie Collins will act as MCs
